VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- #2 seed Hampden-Sydney College rallied with two late wins in singles for a thrilling come-from-behind 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Semifinal victory past #3 seed Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday in Virginia Beach. The visiting Tigers improved to 13-9 overall with their eighth consecutive win, while the host Marlins dropped to 15-10.
H-SC won two of three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 advantage before VWU rallied with wins in three of four singles contests to lead 4-3. The Tigers, however, battled back with a singles win by junior Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C. at No. 2 by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to tie it at 4-4, before sophomore William Driskill/Middleburg clinched the team victory with his win at No. 3 singles by scores of 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4.
"We just had an incredible college match," said first-year head coach Byron Balkin. "We were down 3-4 with two guys on and Will (Driskill) and Michael (Moody) stepped-up huge. We're moving on and continuing to play in our season. We have to regroup and get ready for another big one tomorrow."
In doubles, junior brothers Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody won at No. 1, 8-2. Junior Grayson Burns/Waynesboro and Driskill fell at No. 2, 7-8 (6-8). Junior Clark Cummings/Norfolk and freshman Tyler Brice/Rocky Mount, N.C. won at No. 3, 8-4.
In singles, Cummings also won at No. 5 by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Falling in singles were Matthew Moody at No. 1 (3-6, 3-6), Burns at No. 4 (1-6, 2-6) and Brice at No. 6 (3-6, 5-7).
H-SC, with 10 wins in its last 11 contests, advances to play in the ODAC Tournament Championship for the second-straight year against #1 seed and defending champion Washington and Lee University on Sunday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The Generals advanced with a 5-1 win past #4 Guilford College in the other semifinal.
