HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College took two of three doubles matches, and swept all six singles matches, for an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's tennis home win past the University of Lynchburg on Sunday at the H-SC Tennis Courts. The host Tigers improved to 5-8 overall, remaining unbeaten at 4-0 in the ODAC, while the visiting Hornets dropped to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC.
"I give a lot of credit to our guys for finishing the right way," said first-year head coach Byron Balkin. "I think the match was a very challenging 8-1 win. We need to keep learning what it takes to compete in the moment, not only as individuals, but as a team to reach the next level. Lots of great tennis ahead for us."
In doubles, junior brothers Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C.and Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C.won at No. 1, 8-0. Junior Grayson Burns/Waynesboroand sophomore William Driskill/Middleburgwon at No. 2, 8-7 (2). Junior Clark Cummings/Norfolkand freshman Tyler Brice/Rocky Mount, N.C. fell at No. 3, 6-8.
In singles, Matthew Moody won at No. 1 by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Michael Moody won at No. 2 by scores of 6-1, 6-2. Driskill won at No. 3 by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Burns won at No. 4 by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Brice won at No. 5 by scores of 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (8). Cummings won at No. 6 by scores of 6-1, 7-5.
H-SC, winners of two-straight matches and three of four overall, is scheduled to host ODAC opponent Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 30, beginning at 2 p.m. at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
