Hampden-Sydney Soccer Concludes 2019 Season With 2-2 Tie Against Lynchburg in ODAC Semifinals.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The top-seeded Hampden-Sydney College soccer team battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie against fourth-seeded the University of Lynchburg in the semifinals of the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship at Hellmuth-Gibson Field on Friday evening. Unfortunately, the Hornets advanced to the ODAC Championship contest on penalty kicks, 4-3. The Tigers conclude their season with a final record of 13-5-2, including a school-record 14-match unbeaten streak.

Lynchburg took a pair of shots late in the eighth minute with senior keeper Ian Connor/Midlothian making a save on the rebounded second shot. Just six minutes later, senior Spell Carr/Clinton, N.C. made a short pass to classmate Cole Burton/Haw River, N.C. right in front of the goal, and Burton's shot sailed past the keeper to give the host Tigers the 1-0 lead.

The Hornets would take the next three shots, including a goal in the 18th minute to even the game at 1-1. Both teams would then make a flurry of substitutions before Carr was able to chip a shot through the left side of the goal to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage, one that they would keep going into the intermission.

Just five and half minutes into the second period, the Hornets would even the score once more at 2-2. Neither team was able to find the net the rest of the regulation, sending the game into overtime.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the advancing team had to be decided on penalty kicks (PK). Both teams scored on their first attempt. Lynchburg saved both of the Tigers' next two attempts, while scoring both of theirs for a 3-1 advantage on PK's.

H-SC scored its next two while holding off the Hornets fourth shot to even up the PK's at 3-3. Lynchburg was able to find the corner of the net on its last attempt to advance to the ODAC Championship game.
