BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team scored a pair of goals in both the first and second half to pull away for a 4-1 win over Southern Virginia Saturday afternoon on the road. Senior Jacob Mann/Mebane, N.C. scored his first two goals of the season in the win. Senior Cole Burton/Haw River, N.C. would score what would be the game winner in the 28th minute off a pass from Mann. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-5 on the season while the Knights fall to 1-5.

H-SC put pressure on Southern Virginia early with a pair of corner kicks by Burton and Spell Carr/Clinton, N.C. less than two minutes into the contest. The 10th minute saw both Burton and Carr each collect another corner kick but also saw the first shot of the game. A header by senior Sean McMurray/Apex, N.C. was saved but was the start of a strong offensive effort for the Tigers.

Mann tallied the Tigers' second shot of the day in the 13th minute but was once again saved by the Knights.

A Southern Virginia yellow card a minute and half later gave H-SC a possession deep into the host's territory. At the 15:09 mark of the first half Mann was able to find the back of the net off a pass from fellow senior Niko Reinson/Farmville to give the Tigers a 1-0 a third of the way through the first half.

The Tigers would control the ball for much of the rest of the first half. In the next seven minutes, H-SC would three shots and a pair of corner kicks without the ball spending time in the defensive half of the field of the Tigers.

The pinnacle of this run was when Mann was able to find a streaking Burton from the right side in front of the goal. Burton was able to put a right foot on the ball and was able to guide it past the Knights goalie at the 27:54 mark.

SVU was forced to play defense the rest of the first half as they were only able to take one shot that was far wide.

The second half saw the Tigers keep the pressure on the Knights with four shots by four different Tigers. Carr took the first shot less than three minutes into the period before sophomore Jon Vergara/Chesterfield, junior Jack Sweney/Duluth, Ga. and Burton got into the action with one apiece.

In the 67th minute after shaking his defender, Carr was able to first a shot from over 30 yards out that was just out of the reach of the Knights goalie to put the Tigers up 3-0. After a few misplays by SVU, less than two minutes later, Mann corralled the pass from freshman Boyce Purdie/Clinton, N.C. in front of the Knights goal and able to put the ball in the back of the net to give H-SC its fourth goal of the game.

A late penalty in the 75th minute against the Tigers gave SVU a penalty kick. Kanon Heaton was about to just put the ball past a diving Tiger goalie Ian Connor/Midlothian to give the Knights their lone goal of the game.

Neither team took a shot for the remaining 15 minutes of the contest.

The Tigers took 16 shots in the game with 10 of these being on goal. The Knights had just four over the 90 minutes. H-SC also led Southern Virginia in corner kicks, taking 11 to just two for the hosts.

Connor picked up the win in his first appearance of the season playing 82:18 minutes.

The Tigers return home next Saturday, September 21 when they host Marymount. The game kicks off at 6 p.m.
