FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Jack Sweney/Duluth, Ga. found the back of the net in the 26th minute, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped its soccer season opener, 3-1, to eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins on Friday evening at the UMW Classic. The four-team event is hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
The Blue Jays jumped out in front, 1-0, at the 14:26 mark with a goal by RJ Moore off a loose ball in front of the net. However, the Tigers would even up the score in the first half thanks to Sweney's goal. Senior Jacob Mann/Mebane, N.C. passed the ball to Sweney who's shot was fired past Johns Hopkin's goalie, Xander LeFevre.
The two teams would play even the remaining 20 minutes of the first half to head into the break tied up at 1-1.
After JHU retook the lead off a header goal at 53:58, senior Cole Burton/Haw River, N.C. was able to get around the defender and fire a shot at 55:01, but LeFevre was able to make the save and keep the Blue Jays on top.
In the 68th minute, JHU was able to extend their lead to 3-1 with a goal by Nate Charendoff. Both the Tigers and Blue Jays played even the rest of the game for the final margin.
Junior Gray Sutter/Clinton, N.C. played all 90 minutes in goal for H-SC, making four saves.
The Tigers wrap up action at the UMW Classic on Saturday, August 31 when they take on North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. The Battling Bishops were shut out, 4-0, to host Mary Washington on Friday evening.
