BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. scored four goals, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 14-13 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse road decision at Bridgewater College on Wednesday night in Bridgewater. Freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. added two goals and two assists, while senior captain John Burke/Richmond had three goals for the visiting Tigers (11-4, 6-2), who fell for the first time in seven games against the host Eagles (11-4, 4-4).
BC is coached by Mic Grant, a 1991 graduate of H-SC and a former team captain for the Tigers. He started men's lacrosse for the Eagles during 2011-12, and the program competed for the first time during 2013.
H-SC took a 4-3 scoring advantage in the first quarter at BC, getting goals from Hayden (4g) at 13:38 and 4:00, Burke (3g) at 9:52 and 4:53. The first three goals were unassisted, while sophomore Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. (1g, 2a) provided the assist on the fourth goal of the period, and second score by Hayden.
The Tigers outscored the Eagles 5-1 in the second quarter to lead 9-4 at the intermission. Adding goals were Duffy (2g, 2a) at 10:06 and 7:36, junior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C.(1g) at 6:41, Hayden at 4:26 and Burke at 2:32. Assists went to sophomore Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. (1a) at 10:06, Duffy at 4:26 and Doetzer at 2:32.
BC took a 7-4 advantage in the third quarter to close to within 13-11. H-SC received goals from Hayden at 9:51, sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. (1g, 1a) at 8:39, sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. (1g) at 4:35 and Doetzer at 2:28. Medwar added an assist on the goal by Hayden, while the other three goals were unassisted.
Unfortunately, H-SC did not score a goal in the fourth quarter as the Eagles tallied three unanswered goals, including the game-winner with just 21-seconds remaining for the upset win at home. As mentioned, it was the first-ever victory by BC against the Tigers.
Junior captain and goalie Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the entire 60 minutes, yielding the 14 goals while making 14 saves.
Brummett was 15-28 on face-offs, and collected 10 ground balls. Duffy had five ground balls and O'Brien added two caused turnovers.
H-SC is scheduled to welcome ODAC member Ferrum College on Saturday, April 20, at 12 p.m. at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. It's the final regular season home game, and was rescheduled from Friday, April 19, due to the forecast for severe weather and wet conditions on Friday.
The Tigers will also recognize senior defenseman Lee Penninger/Stafford during a special pre-game ceremony on Saturday morning. Lee missed the previous Senior Day recognition on April 6 due to his commitment to the College's ROTC program.
