No. 13 Hampden-Sydney Golf Finishes Seventh at the Gordin Collegiate Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 13 Hampden-Sydney College posted a final round score of 295 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 870 (286-289-295) to finish seventh among 15 teams at the Gordin Collegiate Classic played at the Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore Hunter Martin/Gloucester led the Tigers with his impressive two-day, 54-hole score of five-under par 67-71-73--211, finishing in a tie for fifth individually among the 75 golfers.

The prestigious fall tournament featured 12 of the Top 24 teams nationally, as ranked in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, including fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) members Guilford and Washington and Lee. The 13th-ranked Tigers finished in the middle of the two ODAC schools, as the fifth-ranked Quakers tied for fourth at 864, and the sixth-ranked Generals tied for 10th at 882.

Martin, who posted new collegiate-bests for 54 holes (211), 36 holes (138) and 18 holes (67), had two birdies and 13 pars during his final round on the par 72, 7,098-yard layout. He was followed by classmate John Hatcher Ferguson/Rocky Mount (73-70-75--218, T-28th), seniors Bruce Shober/Appomattox (72-76-71--219, 32nd) and Adam Hade/Richmond (75-72-76--223, T-46th), along with junior Allen Smith/Durham, N.C. (74-83-82--239, 74th). Ferguson tied his collegiate-best for 54 holes. Shober had an eagle and four birdies on the day for the Tigers, while Ferguson added three birdies, Hade contributed two birdies, and Smith had one birdie.

H-SC tied for fifth in par 4 scoring (4.13), was sixth in par 3 scoring (3.25) and 13th in par 5 scoring (4.92). The Tigers tied for third in eagles (1), were fifth in birdies (47) and 15th in pars (153).

Shober tied for first in eagles (1), tied for seventh in par 4 scoring (3.93) and tied for 14th in pars (36). Martin tied for third in birdies (14), tied for seventh in par 4 scoring (3.93) and tied for ninth in par 5 scoring (4.58). Hade tied for third in par 3 scoring (2.92). Ferguson tied for 15th in birdies (11).

Nationally-ranked No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan won the event with its 24-under par team score of 840, while IWU's Rob Wuethrich took individual medalist honors at 10-under 206 (70-68-68). No. 3 Huntingdon was second at 846, No. 1 Emory was third at 853, while No. 4 Wittenberg and No. 5 Guilford tied for fourth at 864 to complete the Top Five.

H-SC will compete again next week at the 36-hole Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational on October 7-8 at the Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club in Flowery Branch, Georgia.
