HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney head basketball coach Dee Vick recently announced the hire of Rally Axselle as one of his new assistant coaches. He will join the team in 2010-11 as the Tigers look to hoist their record-setting 11th ODAC Championship banner.
Axselle comes to Hampden-Sydney with 17 years of coaching experience in the high school and college ranks. He spent the last two years as the head coach at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, Virginia.
"I have known Rally for 15 years and have admired his work from a distance," said Vick of his assistant. "There is no doubt in my mind that he will make us much better. We have high expectations this year, and Rally can help us reach our potential."
Prior to his two year stint at Deep Run, Axselle served as coach to the varsity and junior varsity programs at Mills Godwin High School in Richmond. During that time, he also spent one year as a head coach for a Richmond AAU team for boys 15 and under.
During the 2001-02 season, he went to Texas to serve as an assistant coach at the University of Texas at Dallas. While there, he participated in every facet of coaching; he recruited, directed practices, edited and reviewed film, coordinated weight training programs and handled several administrative duties.
He had another stint in the collegiate ranks, serving as an intern for the Virginia Commonwealth Ram's men's basketball team during the 1998-99 season.
"Dee has been successful as a player and a coach and I know with his leadership HSC will get back to being a force in the ODAC. I appreciate him giving me this opportunity and I am really excited to be a part of the HSC Basketball family," said Axselle.
Axselle is a 1997 graduate of VCU and a 1999 graduate of VCU's master's program with a master's in teaching. He is a native of Richmond and resides there with his wife Angela and their two children, Rival (7) and Knox (3).
