Matt Spagnolo, Chase Counts Earn 2019 VaSID Baseball All-State Honors

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College juniors Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen and Chase Counts/Virginia Beach have been recognized by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) as College Division Baseball All-State selections.  Spagnolo is a First Team choice at designated hitter, while Counts is a Second Team honoree at second base.

Spagnolo, a team captain, started 31 of 33 games, batting .385 (47-122) with two home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 21 runs, 24 RBIs, 11 walks and three stolen bases.  He had a .557 slugging percentage, a .446 on-base percentage and a .955 fielding percentage with 41 putouts and one assist in 44 chances in the outfield.  Spagnolo led the Tigers in doubles, was second in hits, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, tied for fourth in triples, while fifth in at-bats and home runs.  He was fifth in the ODAC in batting average, ninth in slugging percentage, tied for ninth in doubles, 11th in on-base percentage and tied for 24th in hits.  Matt previously was named to the D3baseball.com All-South Region Second Team and was First Team All-ODAC.

Counts started all 38 games, batting .367 (58-158) with seven home runs, two triples, eight doubles, 43 runs, 29 RBIs, 10 walks and two stolen bases.  He had a .576 slugging percentage, a .401 on-base percentage and a .950 fielding percentage with 61 putouts and 91 assists in 160 total chances in the infield.  Counts led the Tigers in at-bats, hits, runs, home runs and slugging percentage, tied for second in triples and was fourth in doubles.  He was third in the ODAC in runs, tied for fifth in home runs, sixth in slugging percentage, eighth in batting average, tied for ninth in hits, 12th in at-bats and tied for 15th in RBIs.  Chase previously was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region Second Team and was First Team All-ODAC, as well.
