Hampden-Sydney Baseball Splits At Washington and Lee 2-8, 8-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake had three hits and an RBI in the second game, while sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley hit a solo home run in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at Washington and Lee University on Saturday in Lexington. Freshman Trenton Tiller/Powhatan earned the complete-game pitching win in the 8-1 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (11-10-1, 5-5), while junior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox took the mound setback in the 2-8 opener against the host Generals (11-13, 5-8).

In game two, H-SC had eight runs on 11 hits … scoring two runs in the second inning, one in the fourth and five in the seventh.  The Tigers led 3-0 through four innings, 3-1 after five and it was 8-1 through seven innings toward the road victory and split of the two games.

In the second, junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (1-4, RBI) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to score Clawson (0-3, RBI), who had also walked, while senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper (2-4, RBI) walked, as well, with the based loaded to plate junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (2-3, RBI), who had walked, too.

In the fourth, sophomore Matt Dalton/Virginia Beach (0-2) reached on a fielder's choice while attempting a sacrifice bunt, and later crossed the plate courtesy of a wild pitch.

In the seventh, Kasiski (3-5, RBI) singled to score Blevins, who had singled.  Clawson walked with the bases loaded to plate junior captain Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen (0-4), who had been hit-by-a-pitch. Duimstra singled to score junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-6), who had singled, as well.  Sophomore Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (0-2, RBI) reached on a fielder's choice to plate Kasiski, and junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (1-4, RBI) singled to score Clawson.

Tiller (4-0, 1.67 ERA) posted his second consecutive complete-game pitching effort for the Tigers, scattering five hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and one walk over the 9.0 innings.

In game one, H-SC had two runs on nine hits … scoring one run in the fourth inning and one in the ninth.  The Tigers trailed 3-0 through three innings, 4-1 after four and 8-1 through eight before adding the run in the ninth.

In the fourth, Counts (1-4, RBI) provided a run-scoring single to plate Spagnolo (2-4), who had singled to open the frame.

In the ninth, Clawson (1-3, RBI) added a two-out, solo home run to left field for his first homer this season.

Blevins (2-4) contributed two hits, as well, in the opener for the Tigers.

Mayberry (2-2) started and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering eight hits and four runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and three walks.  Freshman Ethan Badin/Richmond tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.  Senior captain Trent Jacobs/Farmville got the final out, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play again on the road at ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 3, at 3:30 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
