HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman Mark Evans/Yorktown had four hits and four RBIs, and senior captain Tyler Blevins/Draper added three hits and three RBIs in the first game, while sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley had two RBIs in the second game, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep past Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox gained the pitching victory in the 12-6 opener for the host Tigers (10-8-1, 4-3), while freshman Trenton Tiller/Powhatan tossed a complete-game mound win in the 6-1 nightcap against the visiting Royals (8-13-1, 2-6).
In game one, H-SC scored 12 runs on 14 hits with one run in the first inning, four runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth. The Tigers led 1-0 early before falling behind 4-1 in the sixth, but rallied back with their 11 runs over three innings for the opening game triumph.
In the sixth, Blevins (3-3, 3 RBIs) doubled to plate junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-5), who had singled to lead-off the at-bat. Junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (2-3, 2 RBIs) added a run-scoring single to score Blevins, and Evans (4-4, 4 RBIs) provided a two-run single to plate Clawson (1-2), who had walked, along with Duimstra.
In the seventh, Blevins blasted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right center field that also scored Counts, who had reached on an error. It was the second homer of the season for Blevins, tying him for the team lead with Counts and junior Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen. Evans added a sacrifice fly RBI that plated Clawson, who had singled.
In the eighth, Duimstra and sophomore Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (0-3, RBI) each walked with the bases-loaded to score Counts and Blevins, respectively, who had singled and walked, respectively. Evans and Hartman each added run-scoring singles, as well, plating Clawson and Duimstra – Clawson had also walked.
Mayberry (2-1) started and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and four runs, all earned, with a season-high 10 strikeouts and one walk. Senior Trey Celata/Chesapeake pitched one-third of an inning, yielding one hit with no runs, no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. tossed 1.2 innings, along one hit and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. Senior Charles Murrah/Tallahassee, Fla. pitched one-third of an inning, allowing no hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Ethan Badin/Richmond recorded the final two outs, yielding no hits and no runs with two strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, H-SC scored six runs on 10 hits with one run in the second inning, two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth. The Tigers and EMU were tied at 1-1 through six innings before scoring five runs late to secure the victory and sweep of the two games.
In the second, Counts (2-3, RBI) singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate when Duimstra (1-4, RBI) grounded out.
In the seventh, Duimstra singled with one out and later scored courtesy of a balk with two outs. Hartman (1-3, RBI) added a run-scoring double that plated Muehleck (0-1), who had drawn a walk.
In the eighth, Triesler (2-4) singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly RBI from Counts. Clawson (1-3, 2 RBIs) closed-out the scoring with a two-run single that plated junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (1-4) and Blevins, who had each singled, as well.
Tiller (3-0) started and pitched the complete-game 9.0 innings for the win, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC will remain at home to host ODAC rival and nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon College on Thursday, March 28, at 4 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark. The league contest against the Yellow Jackets is being sponsored by Real Living Cornerstone real estate in Farmville. A scheduled home game against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University on March 25 has been re-scheduled for April 10.
