HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley had two hits and two RBIs, while juniors Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen and Chase Counts/Virginia Beach each had three hits, as Hampden-Sydney College and St. Mary's (Md.) College tied at 5-5 in 11 innings due to darkness on Sunday at Yank Bernier Fieldat the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Kieran Conway/Chesapeake was the starting pitcher for the host Tigers (4-3-1) against the visiting Seahawks (4-3-1).
H-SC had five runs on 14 hits … scoring one run in the first inning, three in the sixth and one in the ninth to force the extra innings. The Tigers trailed 3-1 through five innings, led 4-3 after six, but trailed again at 5-4 through eight. H-SC tied it at 5-5 in the ninth before the game was called through 11 innings due to darkness.
In the first, Clawson (2-6, 2 RBIs) singled down the right field line with two outs to score Spagnolo (3-6, 3B), who had reached on a fielder's choice. In the sixth, Clawson singled to center with one out to plate Spagnolo, who had singled and stole second base as the lead-off batter that inning. Clawson later crossed the plate, unearned, when freshman Andrew Roach/South Chesterfield (0-5) reached on a fielding error. Junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (2-5) added a two-out RBI single through the left side that scored freshman pinch-runner Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach, who was running for sophomore Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (0-3), who had reached on a fielder's choice.
In the ninth, the Tigers tied the contest in dramatic fashion as Spagnolo drove a two-out, 3-2 pitch to the wall in right center field for a triple, promptly scoring the game-tying run when senior Tyler Blevins/Draper (1-4, 2B, RBI) followed with a clutch RBI double down the right field line on the next pitch. Unfortunately, the hosts left runners on base in both the 10th and 11th innings ahead of it becoming too dark to continue on a cloudy and overcast day with light rain beginning to fall at the end.
Counts (3-5, 2B) had three hits for H-SC, and junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (2-6) added two hits, while Spagnolo had two stolen bases for the Tigers.
Conway started and pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering four hits and three runs, one earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Senior Trey Celata/Chesapeake tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Triesler went the final 3.0 shutout innings, yielding one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.
H-SC is scheduled to welcome Methodist (N.C.) University on Tuesday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at Yank Bernier Fieldat the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.
