Tigers Give Seniors a 1-0 Win Over Roanoke on Senior Day

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Tigers soccer squad upset ODAC leading Roanoke College 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon as H-SC gave the seniors one final win on Miller Field for Senior Day.

Neither team was able to get on board in the first half despite a combined eight shots on goal. Roanoke nearly did in the 7th minute as a Johnny Hughes header shot right in front of the goal was turned back by Duncan Oliphant (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis).

Senior Bryan Wharton (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) put the Tigers on the board in the 74th minute when he corralled a crossing pass towards the left of the goal. Unable to get a high quality touch on it, he still managed to shoot a slow rolling and bouncing shot towards the right post, putting just enough on it to get it past Makel and into the net.

Hampden-Sydney and Wharton nearly got a mirror image goal just 10 minutes later, but a tough bounce prevented Wharton from putting the shot on the net. Roanoke was limited to just one shot after the Tigers went up 1-0.

Oliphant posted eight saves on the afternoon compared to seven for Makel.

With the win, the Tigers finish the season tied for eighth in the ODAC with Virginia Wesleyan. Due to losing the head-to-head matchup with the Marlins, Hampden-Sydney will not make the ODAC Tournament.

After the game, Hampden-Sydney and the soccer program honored its eight seniors: Kevin Anderson, Bryan Hughes, Walton Milam, Cody Murphey, Collin Owens, Duncan Oliphant, Gregorio Pacheco, and Bryan Wharton.

These eight seniors have compiled 45 wins, 22 conference wins, and a home record of 31-11. They have contributed to a top four ODAC finish in 2008 and 2009, earning the #4 seed in 2008 and the #2 seed in 2009. These seniors have reached the semi-finals in each of their three years they have competed in the ODAC tournament, including the school's second ever ODAC Championship game appearance in 2010. In 2009, this class was instrumental in helping lead the HSCsoccer program to a record setting season where they set school records for wins with 16, shutouts with 12, and were ranked 15th in the nation in Goals Against. With their impressive resumes and tireless efforts on the field, thisclass has been monumental in moving the Hampden-Sydney soccer program to new levels.
