LYNCHBURG, VA - The Maryville (TN) Scots held on for a 2-1 victory over Hampden-Sydney soccer on Sunday on the final day of the Lynchburg Kick-Off Classic.
Maryville controlled the time of possession during the first half and their speed and size proved to be a tough matchup for the Tigers. Jake Holt got the Scots on board as he converted off a crossing pass from David Lethco in the ninth minute. Just under 10 minutes later, Travis Bolton went up with an H-SC defender in the box. Bolton made initial contact, but it ended up ricocheting off the H-SC defender and into the goal. Nick DeProspero (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) scored off a 30-yard rocket that just scooted past the left sidebar.
The second-half proved to be chippy with a lot of physical play. The Tigers opened the half aggressive and the halftime adjustments nuetralized much of the speed and size that helped Maryville so much in the first-half. Both team defenses were able to clamp down and limit any good shots at the goal. H-SC got a few late in the game but was not able to capitalize as Maryville was able to recover on defense.
Maryville outshot H-SC 14-10, but the Tigers held a slim 5-4 advantage after intermission. Duncan Oliphant (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) recorded five saves in net compared to four for Zach Gutzman. H-SC drew four corner kicks to just one for Maryville while Maryville was whistled for 11 fouls compared to nine for the Tigers.
Jackson Parker (Raleigh, NC/Sanderson) was named to the All-Classic team.
