Hampden-Sydney Falls 13-11 to Roanoke in ODAC Semi-Finals

SALEM, VA - The Roanoke College Maroons advanced to the ODAC Championship match to play Lynchburg College as Hampden-Sydney fell 13-11 on Sunday afternoon in the Semi-Finals of the ODAC Tournament.

Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead four minutes into the contest. Roanoke's Mike Hayden tied the game at the 9:35 mark, and Kyle Smith gave Roanoke a 2-1 lead a minute later and added another goal at 3:07. Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) posted his first goal of the game at 2:02, and Justin Tuma scored with nine seconds left in the quarter to put Roanoke up 4-2.

Joey Coretti found the back of the net 1:21 into the second quarter, but just a little over a minute later,Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) negated Coretti's tally to make it 5-3. At the 10:55 mark, Mavromatis found the back of the net again and two minutes later Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored the Tigers third straight goal to tie the game at 5-5. Trey Keeley won the ensuing face-off and ground ball and ran down the field to score. Keller added his second goal of the game at 5:58 to tie the game again at 6-6 and put the Tigers back in the lead at 3:40. Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) provided the Tigers momentum heading into the half with a goal with 23 ticks left, making it a 8-6 Tiger lead.

Hawthorne opened the half with a Tiger goal at the 11:31 mark, and Mavromatis provided H-SC a 10-6 advantage with 9:36 to go in the quarter. However, it would prove to be all Roanoke from then on. Tuma got the rally started with a face-off win and groundball for a goal just eight seconds later and tacked on another goal at 4:25 to cut the lead to 10-8. Richard Lachlan added on a man-up goal at the 2:47 mark in the third and Jeff Keating posted the game-tying goal with 2:13 to go in the quarter, sending the game into the fourth quarter tied at 10-10.

Spencer Parsons put Roanoke back on top 11-10 just over three minutes into the final period and Tyler Cockey made it a 12-10 game at 6:53. Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) cut the lead to 12-11 at the 3:33 mark and Keating provided the insurance goal with 2:36 left in the game.

Keller scored three goals on 16 shots, Mavromatis had three tallies and one assist, and Hawthorne found the back of the net twice and added two helpers. Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Meriod)stopped 15 shots with four ground balls.

Tuma contributed a hat trick while Keating and Smith each had two scores. Keeley and Conner DuBois had two assists. Charles Pease recorded 15 saves while Tuma won 15 of 21 face-off attempts.

Roanoke was 4-7 on extra-man opportunities and outshot Hampden-Sydney 56-41. The Maroons went 16-16 on clears compared to 19-25 for the Tigers. RC won 18 of 27 face-offs and held a 39-25 advantage in ground balls.

Hampden-Sydney concludes their season with a 12-5 overall record.
