Walker Named Lanier Finalist

Holton Walker

RICHMOND, VA-The Touchdown Club of Richmond has announced its three finalists for the Willie Lanier Award, given to the best football player in Division II, III, and NAIA in the state, and Hampden-Sydney junior receiver Holton Walker (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) has been selected as one of the three finalists for the second straight season.

Walker is a finalist with Randolph-Macon's running back Will McGhee – the ODAC Offensive Player of the Year – and Newport News Apprentice's linebacker Brock Bullock.

Walker also won the TD Club of Richmond's Wide Receiver of the Year and is a two-time First Team All-ODAC honoree.

The Lynchburg native had a record-breaking junior season, setting school records for catches (111) and yards (1,723) while catching an ODAC-high 16 touchdowns which tied the school record. Currently, Walker leads the nation in total yards and receiving yards-per-game (143.6). He also broke the school marks for single-game receiving yards with 235 yards against Averett; he later broke that record with 268 yards on a program-high 16 catches in the first round of the playoffs against Maryville.

For his career, Walker has 189 catches, 3,024 yards, and 28 touchdowns – all in the Hampden-Sydney top-five.

The Touchdown Club will also present the Bill Dudley Award, given to the top Division I player in the state. In the field are Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke, Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas, and James Madison linebacker Stephon Robertson.

The awards are presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Richmond and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Dudley was a standout at the University of Virginia and with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Lanier, from Richmond, played at Maggie Walker High School and Morgan State University. He was a star middle linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs and also is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Dudley/Lanier Award banquet is Wednesday, December 4 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel and Spa in Short Pump. Tickets are $40 for the general public and $35 for Touchdown Club members.

The evening begins with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. The banquet follows at 7:30.
