FOREST, VA-Junior quarterback Nash Nance (Calhoun, GA/Tennessee) and junior defensive lineman Scott Markland (Stephens City, VA/Sherando) were named this week's ODAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, after the Tigers' 52-0 win over Guilford on Saturday. The honor is the second of the season for Nance and first for Markland.
Nance had a hand in five of Hampden-Sydney's six offensive touchdowns and completed 76.2-percent of his passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He completed passes to nine different receivers on the day, including scoring strikes to Eric Gorsline (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy), Holton Walker (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) and Joey Kernan (Derwood, MD/Gonzaga). Nance also led all rushers in the contest with a season-high 92 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Nance currently leads the ODAC with 2,254 passing yards and is second in touchdown passes with 17.
Markland put together a big day from the interior of the Tigers' defense, and the nose guard made four stops, including three tackles for a loss that cost Guilford 17 yards of offense. Included in those TFLs were 2.5 sacks for a loss of 15 yards. Hampden-Sydney notched a season-high seven sacks on the day. Markland also got involved in the turnover game as he covered a fumble in the second quarter that led to a touchdown to put Hampden-Sydney ahead, 21-0. As a unit, the Tigers' defense held Guilford to 118 yards of total offense, including just seven yards on the ground. Markland now has 26 total tackles on the season, with the 2.5 sacks marking his of the season.
The Tigers will host Washington & Lee on Saturday, November 9 with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
