HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney will open up its 119th season of football this Saturday in the friendly confines of Lewis C. Everett Stadium against the Cougars of Averett University. The two teams have met just once on Fulton Field, but have played three times total in as many years. The last time these two teams played in front of the Tiger faithful was 2011 when the Tigers took a 63-9 decision.
Hampden-Sydney enters the season as the preseason favorite in the ODAC, but narrowly beat out the competition with Randolph-Macon trailing by two points, Bridgewater by three, and defending champion Washington & Lee by four points.
Averett was picked to finish ninth in the USA South, with defending champion Christopher Newport picked to repeat. The Cougars were 1-9 last season, but dealt with injuries all year; this season, they return 15 starters.
