Tiger Football to Kick Off Season at Averett

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-This Saturday will mark the start of the 118th season of football at Hampden-Sydney. The 2012 Tigers will kick off their title defense in Danville against the Cougars of Averett University.

The Tigers, who were picked to win the ODAC in the preseason coaches' poll, return a bevy of starters and key reserves from their 8-3 ODAC Championship season last year.

The Cougars were picked to finish fifth in the USA South after finishing the 2011 season at 3-7 overall and 2-5 in conference.

These two teams have met twice before with the Tigers winning both match ups. In 2011, Hampden-Sydney took a 63-9 decision at Everett Stadium behind 273 yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Travis Lane.

2010 was the last time the Tigers were in Danville and marked the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Tigers jumped out to a big lead early and took a 45-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Averett, however, rallied in the fourth for 23 unanswered points, but it was not enough as Hampden-Sydney took a 45-30 victory.
