LYNCHBURG, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team suffered a 4-2 loss at the hands of sixth-seeded Roanoke College in the second day of the ODAC Baseball Tournament. The loss is the second in the tournament for the fifth-seeded Tigers, eliminating them from the field of play. The Tigers end their season at 21-19 overall and 10-10 in conference play. Roanoke continues its quest at 26-16 overall in 9-11 in the ODAC.
Both pitching staffs had strong days, holding each offense to five hits. Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) was the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing four runs – just two earned – on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts. His counterpart, Steven Loney, picked up the win after surrendering one run on just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.
Roanoke was the first to strike offensively, scoring two runs in the top of the second.
The Maroons fired right back in the top half of the fifth, however, with a solo homerun from Sean Guida to push the lead back to two at 3-1. Roanoke then added one to the board in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1.
4-2 would be as close as the Tigers would get with Sal Trancucci picking up the save after allowing just one run on two hits and a walk with a strikeout in two innings.
Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) threw two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts, and Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) threw a scoreless inning, giving up just two walks.
Offensively, Sutphin and Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) each led the was, going 2-for-3. Sutphin hit a triple and Fontana a single. Goodwyn had the Tigers' only other hit with his solo homerun.
