ASHLAND, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team took a 13-5 loss to arch-rival Randolph-Macon in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets used two big innings – including six runs in the first inning – to lift themselves to victory. The Tigers now stand at 18-15 overall and 7-8 in conference; Randolph-Macon sits at 24-8 on the season and 12-4 in ODAC play.
The Jackets jumped out to the early lead, using seven hits to score six runs in the first inning and two runs on three hits in the second to take a quick 8-0 lead.
Hampden-Sydney chipped away, starting with Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) scoring in the third. Joey Sutphin (Radford, VA/Radford HS) drove in Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) batted in Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) in the fourth, bringing the Tigers within five.
Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) then scored on a Kasiski RBI-single, making it an 8-4 game.
That would be as close as the Tigers would get, however, with Randolph-Macon added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 12-4.
The Tigers did add one more run in the sixth, with Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), but the Jackets responded with one more run of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
On the mound, Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) was the pitcher of decision, allowing six runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-thirds innings. Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.
Cameron Meyers (Benson, NC/West Johnston), Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian), Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell), and Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) each pitched one inning. Celata and Maitland each had scoreless efforts.
Offensively, the Tigers had 11 hits to Randolph-Macon's 19. Smith, Goodwyn, Kasiski, and Hartman each had two hits.
