HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball fell for just the second time this season as Christopher Newport bested the Tigers 5-2 at Ty Cobb Ballpark at Wurdeman Stadium. The Tigers now stand at 6-2 on the season while Christopher Newport improves to 7-6.
Pitching dominated the first two innings, but the Captains were the first to hit the board, using three hits and a walk to score four runs in the top of the third.
Hampden-Sydney was finally able to break through in the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits. Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) was first to score on a Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) RBI-single. Maitland then later scored on an RBI-single from Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).
After the teams got their runs in the third and fifth, pitching stepped up again as the two teams threw two scoreless innings before the Captains tacked on one more run in the top of the eighth.
Hampden-Sydney was able to get a runner on base in each of the eighth and ninth innings but was unable to capitalize.
On the mound, Matthew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) was the pitcher of decision, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in three innings. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) threw three scoreless innings, giving up four hits with three strikeouts. Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) and Maitland each pitched a scoreless inning while Zach Perkins (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) allowed one unearned run in his inning of work.
Hampden-Sydney will remain at home as the Tigers will host Averett on Saturday, March 4 in a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
