Tigers Split Double Header at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team took a 6-1 win in the first of two games against ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan, but although the Tigers led 2-0 in game two, the Marlins came back to take the 4-2 win. Hampden-Sydney now stands at 12-24 overall and 7-9 in the ODAC. The Marlins are 8-22 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

In the first game, the Tigers took a 6-1 decision behind a complete game performance from rookie Zach Whitaker (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry). Whitaker picked up his sixth win of the year after allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six and walking two.

Starting pitcher Alex Tucci was the Marlins' pitcher of decision as he surrendering three runs on four hits in three innings.

The Tigers wasted no time hitting the scoreboard as Jeff Gray (Newport Newport News, VA/Menchville) hit his first career triple to score Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) in the first.

In the second, Hunter Lewis (Newport News, VA/Menchville) was able to cross the plate on a passed ball, and then Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) scored on a Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) RBI-single to go up 3-0.

Virginia Wesleyan broke its drought with a run in the third as Evan Polk scored on a Pike Brynildsen RBI.

After two scoreless innings, the Tigers pounced again in the sixth and seventh. After Lewis led off the sixth with a double, Zeb Cope (Advance, NC/Davie County) later batted him in to put the team up 4-1.

Just like the sixth, the Tigers led off with a double - this time from Wind - and later capitalized. Kuhns knocked in his first run, scoring Wind on his second hit of the day.

The Tigers added to their cushion in the ninth, and Beau Flinchum (Ashland, VA/Hanover) batted in Gray for the final 6-1 margin.

Wind and Kuhns each recorded two hits to lead the Tigers' 11 hit performance.

In the second game, the Tigers again hit the scoreboard early with Wind scoring on an Erick Herrmann (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) to take the lead in the first.

The next five innings were a pitcher's duel with neither team able to score. Dan Nicoll (Centreville, VA/Bishop Ireton) pitched five scoreless innings while giving up just two hits.

For the Marlins, Anthony Sircusa - who also went 2-for-4 from the plate - ended up going the distance while allowing a run in the first and not again until the seventh.

The run in the seventh came when Hamlett scored on a Kuhns RBI.

The home team, however, down 2-0 in the eighth, rallied to score four unanswered runs to claim the victory.

Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings.

Offensively, Flinchum and Hamlett combined for four of the Tigers' seven hits.

The Tigers will return home to wrap up the regular season with a Saturday double header against Bridgewater College on April 21. The first game is set for 12:00 pm.
