Averett Topples Baseball 13-0 with Two Big Innings
DANVILLE, VA-The Averett Cougars used seven runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth to take a 13-0 victory on Owen-Fulton Field Thursday afternoon. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 10-20 overall while remaining at 5-6 in ODAC play. The Cougars improve to 23-16 on the season while standing at 5-7 in the USA South.
Averett recorded 13 hits to Hampden-Sydney's five. Two of the Tigers' hits came from sophomore Colby Carter (Manakin-Sabot, VA/Goochland) who went 2-for-2 from the plate in his start at second base.
Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) started on the bump for the Tigers and took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work. He walked a batter while striking out one. Adam Netherland (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) gave up seven runs - three earned - on six hits in two-thirds innings.
Freshman Luke Brunot (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) pitched 3.1 innings while surrendering five runs - just two earned - on five hits while striking out three and walking three. Kyle McKay (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) closed out the game for the Tigers, pitching two scoreless and hitless innings while walking and striking out one batter.
Averett's Tyler Long was the winning pitcher as he shutout the Tigers for five innings while allowing just three hits.
Five Cougars recorded two hits, and Kyle Newcomb batted in a game-high three runs. Jordan Kidd went 0-for-3 from the plate but scored three runs courtesy two walks and an error.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday, April 11, as they host the Hornets of Lynchburg College for a 3:30 pm ODAC match up.
